How to Make Your Home Smell Good: Every Method Compared
Candles, reeds, ultrasonic diffusers, lava stones, ceramic diffusers and sprays each suit different rooms. Start with fresh air, then match the method to the space with this practical guide.

A home that smells good isn't about one product. It is about getting rid of bad smells, choosing the right scenting method for each room, and not overdoing it. Here is a practical guide to every option, from candles to lava stones, and how to put them together.
Start with fresh air, not fragrance
Fragrance on top of stale air just smells like fragrance on top of stale air. Start with the basics:
- Ventilate daily. Open windows for 10 to 15 minutes, even in humid weather, to replace stale air.
- Control humidity. Damp creates musty smells and mould. In tropical climates, run air-conditioning or a dehumidifier in closed rooms and dry laundry thoroughly.
- Clean the sources: bins, drains, fridge, soft furnishings, pet bedding and shoes. Bicarbonate of soda absorbs odours in fridges and shoe cupboards. Our Perfumed Foot & Shoe Spray deals with the shoe rack.
- Wash fabrics: curtains, cushion covers and rugs hold smells for months.
Every home fragrance method compared
| Method | Strength | How long | Best for | Watch out for |
| Scented candle | Strong when lit | Hours per burn; a 200 g candle lasts about 40–50 hours | Evenings, atmosphere, living and dining rooms | Open flame; ventilate; never unattended |
| Reed diffuser | Gentle, constant | Weeks to months | Hallways, bathrooms, bedrooms | Nose adapts; flip reeds |
| Ultrasonic diffuser | Adjustable, strong | While running | Quick scenting, wellbeing routines | Clean regularly; careful with pets |
| Lava stones | Gentle, close-range | A few days per top-up | Desks, bedside tables, small rooms | Keep lid on when not in use |
| Ceramic diffuser | Gentle, very local | Several days per top-up | Wardrobes, cars, drawers, small spaces | Oil can mark fabrics on contact |
| Room and fabric spray | Instant, short-lived | Minutes to hours | Before guests arrive, linen, upholstery | Test on delicate fabrics |
How to use each one
Candles
Make the first burn long enough to melt the surface edge to edge, trim the wick before each burn, and burn for no more than three to four hours. See candle tunnelling and are scented candles toxic? Our Fine Aromatic Candle comes in nine of our perfume scents.
Reed diffusers
Ideal for constant background scent. Flip the reeds every two to three days and replace them with each refill. Full tips in why your reed diffuser stopped working.
Ultrasonic diffusers
Fill with water to the line and add about 3 to 8 drops of oil. Run for 30 to 60 minutes at a time rather than all day, and clean the reservoir weekly to stop residue and bacteria building up.
Lava stones
Volcanic lava stone is porous, so it soaks up oil and releases it slowly. Add 8 to 15 drops to the stones in our Lava Stones in Glass Jar, and put the lid on when you don't need scent to make it last longer. It is flame-free and silent, which makes it ideal for a desk or bedside.
Ceramic diffusers
Unglazed ceramic absorbs oil like lava stone. Add 10 to 12 drops to a Ceramic Fragrance Diffuser and hang it in a wardrobe, car or small room.
Room and fabric sprays
Spray high into the air and let the mist fall, or lightly over curtains, cushions and bedding from about 30 cm away. Our Room & Fabric Spray comes in six of our perfumes, so you can match your home to your fragrance.
Scent each room for its purpose
- Entrance: a reed diffuser, for a constant first impression.
- Living room: a candle in the evening; a reed diffuser in the day.
- Bedroom: soft, calming scents on lava stones or a short diffuser session before bed. See essential oils for sleep.
- Bathroom: a reed diffuser with a fresh scent.
- Workspace: something bright and clarifying on lava stones. See rosemary oil for focus.
- Wardrobe and car: ceramic diffusers.
Less is more
Use one or two scents per space, keep them related (woody with woody, fresh with fresh), and let rooms rest. A home should smell inviting when you walk in, not overwhelming after an hour. Our Aromatic Infusion Oils work in reed diffusers, lava stones, ceramic diffusers and ultrasonic diffusers, so one scent can carry through a whole room.
If you live with cats, dogs or birds, take extra care with diffusers and concentrated oils. Read are essential oils safe for pets? before you start.
